As gas prices continue to rise, the auto industry is out in full force touting the benefits of car maintenance. Many repair shops even have custom “fuel saver” services. While maintaining one’s car is indeed important, does it really save gas? Before we answer this, let’s step back and look at auto maintenance for today’s cars.

The first question we need to ask is – what does my car need (according to the manufacturer) for it to be considered “maintained.” Today’s cars no longer have distributor caps, rotors, points, and a variety of other ignition components – so these don’t need maintenance. Many vehicles now come with extended service parts such as 100,000-mile platinum spark plugs and life-time fuel filters. Oil change intervals have been extended to 5,000 miles or more. The 3,000-mile oil change is ancient history. Coolant flushes and transmission services aren’t needed until 100,000 miles if at all. Yet, even if we performed all the above services, will they increase fuel efficiency? Probably not. Unless your vehicle is misfiring (i.e., not running on all cylinders), you’re gas mileage is likely fine.

So what part of car maintenance adversely effects gas mileage for the average driver of a late model vehicle? Three things: tire pressure, air filters, and excess carbon.

Tire Pressure: Setting your tire pressure is free, and is the best maintenance service you can perform to maintain maximum fuel efficiency. It’s that simple.

Air Filters: Air filters can indeed get plugged after a considerable amount of driving and can then restrict air flow, which will not allow your fuel to burn efficiently. This can also cause excess carbon build-up, which can reduce miles per gallon. The good news: air filters are cheap ($15 to $30), are easy to install, and usually only need replacement every 30,000 miles.

Excess Carbon: There is another auto maintenance service that “can” help gas mileage. It’s called a fuel system cleaning service. Some repair centers call it fuel injector auto maintenance, or a fuel injection service. Simply, chemicals are added to your fuel system through a variety of orifices to clean out excess carbon deposits on your valves, pistons and intake manifold. This naturally forming carbon (in excess) is not good for gas mileage. Excess carbon absorbs gasoline, which would otherwise be used to power your vehicle. However, before you run out and spend the $150 + to have this service performed, there is one important consideration – the service will only work for vehicles that need it. In other words, yes the stuff works, but you’re vehicle may not have any excess carbon build-up. You wouldn’t wash clean clothes – right?

When you see those “fuel saver” services for $100 to $300, they’ll likely include an air filter, tire pressure check, and a fuel system cleaning service. If you’re wondering whether or not your vehicle needs it, ask yourself the following:

If you can answer these questions affirmatively, you’re probably ok. Buying cheap, no-name gas once-in-awhile is ok. Replacing the air filter and setting your tire pressure is common sense. Also, if you drive like grandma, get out on the highway and press the vertical pedal at your right foot “all the way to the floor” until your vehicle accelerates to speeds at which you’re not all too entirely comfortable. Then repeat a few more times. This will help clean out excess carbon – FREE – less the cost of fuel. Be careful. Watch out for cops.

In summary, follow your manufacturer guidelines for your car’s maintenance – not ones designed by those who stand to benefit most. Use name-brand fuel, set your tire pressure now and again, pop in an air filter, according to your car’s recommended interval, and don’t be afraid to drop the hammer now and again.

Car maintenance can be expensive, and the rising cost of gasoline in the United States can really drain, so to speak, the funds available for car maintenance and related costs.
According to Rich White, executive director of the car care council, loose or missing gas caps, under inflated tires, worn spark plugs, and dirty air filters all contribute to poor fuel economy.
Here are some tips, courtesy of the car care council, to help you save money on gasoline, even as the prices continue to climb.
Do not drive aggressively. This can actually lower gas mileage by up to 33 percent on the highway and five percent on city streets, resulting in a cost of 7 to 49 cents per gallon.
Take care of your tires. A smart care maintenance tip in general, since driving with an under inflated tire is the equivalent of driving your car with the parking break on, and can cost you a mile for each gallon.
Watch out for worn spark plugs. Vehicles have four, six, or eight spark plugs, and these fire as much as three million times every on thousand miles, which creates heat, electrical, and chemical erosion. Replace your spark plug regularly for proper care maintenance, and gas conservation as well.
Change your dirty air filter. Air filters clogged with dust, dirt, and bugs cuts off the air and results in more gas than necessary being burned. This wastes gas, and causes the engine to lose power as well.
Watch those gas caps. Approximately 17 percent of vehicles, according to the CCC, have gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing, and this causes 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize each year.
Do not idle excessively. Idling gets you zero miles to the gallon, and you really only need to warm up your vehicle for about one to two minutes.
Watch that speed. As your cars speed increases, gas mileage decreases, and each mph over sixty results in an additional ten cents per gallon cost.
Lose some weight. By simply removing unnecessary items from your vehicle, you could reduce the weight by 100 pounds, which in turn will reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent, based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the weight of the vehicle.
Proper car maintenance is the best way to get the most out of your car, and to make sure that it remains fuel efficient. Do not skip regular visits to the auto mechanic the health of your car depends on them.

Many new car buyers will appreciate the latest automotive trends expected to take shape in 2006 and beyond. A greater variety of downsized, fuel-efficient SUVs will be available. New vehicle safety features like tire pressure monitors will reach the market. And sales promotions like last summer’s employee discount campaign are expected to set the stage for year-round, no-haggle vehicle pricing.
But a less-publicized automotive trend – rising interest rates – will make 0-percent car loans a rare breed in 2006. Increasingly, consumers will need to comparison shop for their car loans before they go to buy, just as they do for the vehicles themselves.
According to http://Bankrate.com, interest rates on new car loans rose steadily throughout 2005 and the pattern is expected to continue into 2006. The difference of just two percentage points on your APR can either save or cost you more than $1,400 over the life of a typical loan.
“Many consumers do not realize that they have other options for financing their car, outside of the dealership,” said Brian Reed, vice president of Capital One Auto Finance. “There are some great options for consumers to finance their car on a direct basis, versus relying on the dealer to provide that service for you.”
Because education is the key to getting the best deal when financing a car, Capital One Auto Finance offers prospective car buyers the following helpful tips:
Set a realistic budget. Choose a vehicle that won’t overextend you financially. A general rule of thumb is that no more than 15 percent to 20 percent of your total monthly budget should go toward all your car-related expenses.
Verify your credit record. Order a copy of your credit report to ensure it’s accurate and in good shape. Correct any errors before applying for a loan.
Comparison shop for loans. Check out credit unions, banks and online lenders to see what rates are available in the market, so that you know a competitive rate when you see one. Visit Web sites such as http://www.bankrate.com and http://www.capitaloneautofinance.com.
Arrive with financing in your pocket. Having approved, no-obligation financing in hand gives you a competitive advantage when you go to buy, giving you the power of a cash buyer. If the dealer offers a better loan rate, you can take it with no penalty.
Approach your purchase as three transactions. It’s best to treat each part of the purchase separately: 1) financing; 2) trade-in; and 3) vehicle purchase. This will simplify the process and maximize your negotiating opportunities.
Match length of loan to expected length of ownership. Select your loan term based on how long you plan to own the vehicle. Buyers who take out longer-term loans can find themselves “upside down” on their loan (owing more money on the car than it’s worth in trade).
Review your financing terms carefully. Make sure you know your interest rate, monthly payment, amount you are financing, the length of your loan and your trade-in value.
“If car buyers would spend just a fraction of the time researching their auto loan as they do the latest features on their new car, they’d be surprised at how much money they could save,” said Reed of Capital One.

Getting insurance on a sports car can be more expensive than what you are looking to spend. Sports cars usually require a higher rate every month than most other cars. At most all sports car owners want full coverage on their prize winning jewels. Even though getting insurance on your 350z will never compare to getting insurance on your family mini van, there are however a few things that a sports car owner can do to get lower rates. Going by these four tips, can help a sports car owner keep there rates lower than any before.
First, an owner should check to see if any memberships will give any discounts on rates. At times a membership can greatly reduce your rates. Teachers and government workers usually get these discounts but rarely see them. Always ask your agent if there are any clubs you can join to lower your rates. Generally, a club membership can get you lower rates than if you hadn’t joined one.
Next, you should always compare the prices of rates from different companies. It does not take a long time for you to call around and compare the rates for your car. You might find a really low price from an agency you may have never though of. There are aids available to help you compare these rates; these can be the best place to find your really low rates. Although, you may get better offers it will pay off to call around. Most always an agent with the knowledge of the info you need may be able to save you hundreds of dollars by switching to there company.
After that, you may get even more by bringing multiple policies to your agent. A lot of insurance companies can help you with lower rates if you use them to insure everything you have and own. You can save a lot by having all your vehicles insured by the same agency. You can most likely save more by making these deals under the table. The savings may not be pointed at your sports car. Instead you may find cost savings just from having all your cars insured with them.
At last, ask your agent if there are any special programs that you can get into that can lower your rates every month. Some agencies may lower your rates if you take a course online for defensive driving. If a kid is driving a car, there may be lower rates for good grades. Most agencies will offer to lower your rates if you remain accident free for a period of time.
It is of great interest to get good insurance for your sports car. Getting cheaper coverage can lower your rates, but more than likely can leave you unprotected.
If you remember to ask about memberships, compare, and take all your business to one agent they will most likely save you a whole lot on your rates, you can more than likely get the lowest rates around..

Car insurance rates are at an all time high, and complaints are being reported nationwide. People who own cheaper cars, or cars with low payments, complain that the cost to insure their car is more than their car payments. This is understandable, as the average policy is several hundred dollars a year! There are several factors that can affect ones rate, such as driving record and age. If insurance companies base their rates on these factors, are consumers able to manipulate them and take prices into their own hands? Fortunately there are many small changes you can make that can have a large impact on your car insurance rate.

Depending on your background or location, some tips may not apply to you.

1. Keep Your Driving Record Squeaky Clean.

This can have a very large impact as to whether your insurance rates are sky high, or competitively low. Most insurance companies look at the last 2 years of your record. They look at accidents, speeding tickets, moving violations, DUI’s, etc. Keep your record clean and you’re sure to keep your premiums low.

2. Maintain a Good Credit Rating.

Mortgage companies and credit unions aren’t the only companies looking at your credit history. Car insurance companies pay close attention to your credit rating. They use this rating to determine your risk level. People who pay their mortgage payments and credit cards on time are less likely to get into an accident. It’s all in the statistics!

3. Choose Your Car Wisely.

Car insurance companies don’t like Lamborghini’s and Ferraris. And they prove it by raising the rate on their owners. Any car that is considered sporty, luxury, or any general high octane vehicle will get their premiums raised. As fun as these cars can be, they can really hurt your wallet in the insurance department. The size of an engine is not the only thing your insurance company looks at. They look at safety features, age of the car, and the general overall value. If you drive an unsafe car, you’re going to feel it in your rates.

4. Use Multi Car, or Home Policies.

Many companies will offer a great discount when you provide coverage to all of your cars, and even your home. Check with your agent to see what kind of discounts and packages they offer in this department. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the amount of dollars you can save in the long run.

5. Shop Around!

Not all companies are created equally. Each and every company uses its own algorithm and calculations to determine your overall risk level and price point. Many companies offer free online quotes that make it easy to compare each company side by side. Take advantage of this technology, you may find yourself saving hundreds of dollars yearly with the right company!

In the previous part of this article I covered ten ways to help reduce your car insurance quotes, despite petrol prices going down our insurance premiums continue to rise to the point of many of us questioning whether having a car is really worth it. Well help is at hand yet again, here are another ten tips and tricks to help bring your car insurance quotes back down to manageable levels.11 – Avoid the soft top at all costs! Soft top cars are an insurance nightmare; they’re easy to break into and tend to be higher performance vehicles. You’re more likely to be hurt in an accident too so medical costs being claimed for are going to do you no favours come renewal time.12 – Get extra qualified for driving by taking a pass plus course or an advanced driving course, by learning how to be safer and being able to drive more confidently in most situations you are proving to your car insurance provider that you can be trusted not to wrap your car round a lamp post.13 – Cut down on who is listed as a named driver on your car, the more people that drive a car the more risk there is and so premiums shoot up. Fewer drivers, especially teenage drivers will typically bring your quotes down assuming you have a clean record yourself.14 – Save money on your breakdown cover by checking your battery, water, oil and petrol levels before a big journey and every few months for your oil as these can be common call out reasons. You’ll typically receive a no call out bonus at the end of the year if you don’t need to call out the AA, RAC or whoever you are with.15 – Consider only insuring 3rd party, fire and theft insurance if your car is old or of low value. Cars under £2000 in value are typically not worth insuring with full comprehensive cover as most repairs will cost more than the cost of the car. 16 – If you are deemed a bad risk from previous convictions or financially then there are some insurers who specialise in insuring people like you! Search them out and ask insurers whether they will cover someone in your circumstance.17 – Some companies will offer No Claims Bonus protection where in certain circumstances you will not have to lose your NCB, typically this helps when someone else is found to be at fault of an accident with your car, considering NCBs are highly sought after it’s no surprise that many people want to keep their record squeaky clean.18 – .Compare multiple providers, by checking with other companies you may be able to find the perfect insurer for you personally. Sometimes playing one insurer off against the other may even help, when you get quoted for a price and another has quoted a better price then mention it and ask if they can beat it, if they won’t then you have still got the other provider so you can’t lose. Again: don’t ask, don’t get.19 – Lower your mileage and you can get some nice discounts, because you’re on the road less then you’re less likely to be involved in an accident. Mileages under 12,000 typically earn 5 to 10 percent discount on car insurance and if you’re in a household with multiple cars and have a mileage of fewer than 5,000 then you’ll get even further cuts.20 – Sometimes going direct to the insurers themselves can be the best option; some insurers do not buy into the whole insurance broker business and their discounts are saved for those who contact them directly, invariably this is only a small amount of insurers that adopt this policy, possibly because they don’t have very competitive prices! So there you go twenty tips to drag your car insurance premiums down, by simply heeding the advice of a few of these tips you’re going to help bring your car insurance quotes down to a more manageable cost.

You’re in college you and you just bought a car, now you need car insurance so you may “roll on the road”. How do you find an insurance policy suitable for you and your car? You need a cheap one of course, but one who can also provide sufficient coverage.

Do you know what are you entitled to since you’re a student? No? Well in the following you will get a lot of answers. Basically car insurance for students it’s about the same thing with any car insurance only that a student can qualify for few discounts that the average man can’t.

What influences the amount you pay on your insurance policy?

The price of the policy is set based on age, gender, driving record, location of vehicle, vehicle accident history, daily mileage; you can’t avoid these factors but there are ways to lower your premium by choosing the right insurance plan.

What should you do first?

You should shop around , find out as much information from at least 3 different insurance companies, compare the offers and see which has the more suitable premiums that situates in your budget.

Get to know the basics of a student car insurance plan

This is what car insurance plan should contain:

Do your grades affect the price of the policy?

In a way yes they do, many insurance companies offer discounts to students that maintain a B average or higher. Bring proof of your grades when you apply for your car insurance.

Get your car insurance policy at the same company as the rest of your family

Make shore you apply for all the discounts the company is offering, even if you get a student discount. You may get family discount if you purchase your insurance from the same company your family did.

How do you know if you qualify for a cheaper premium?

Car insurance is usually based on the car’s safety probability so if you’re thinking to buy a high speed sport car and you want a smaller premium better think again. As well look at the possibility to install a burglar alarm that should reduce your premium considerably.

Are you a safe driver?

If you want to lower your insurance policy you shouldn’t drink and drive! This sounds like a police warning but actually this the most important step in lowering your car insurance. The fewer driving violations you have and car accidents the more money you safe on the insurance. Park your car in a safe area and maintain the speed limit.

A car to a college student it’s like “a baby to his mother”, having a car to college is a luxury that many students don’t have. College should be both fun and safe. Take care of you and your car; Get an insurance policy so you would feel more secure.
