Choosing the right domain name

One of the most important decisions a beginning webmaster has to make, is choosing the right domain name for his/her future website. If it isn’t just going to be a trademark you already control, the next few considerations might become handy when choosing the perfect domain name for your site.First of all the domain name should be descriptive. nyctires.com is much better name for a New York car tire company than, for example, zlorg.com. Also, with a good descriptive name you are probably going to get some traffic to your site without doing any advertising! This results mainly from internet users typing straight to the address bars of their browsers instead of searching for the terms in some search engine. Depending on the quality of your domain name, this kind of traffic can bring a couple to thousands of surfers to your site per month! The length of the domain name in question is also important. The fact, that all the four letter .com names (even dkiy.com) have already been registered, reflects the importance on having a short, easy to remember domain name for your site. However, do not sacrifice too much descriptiveness for shortness. Use tools like Google’s keyword tool to find out roughly how much attention a set of keywords that make up your domain name might get.Few things to avoid are hyphens and numbers in the name: they can drastically reduce the amount of type-in traffic your domain would get, and will make it harder to remember (and easy to remember wrong: when your customers forget the hyphen, they might end up on your competitors site!).Make use of domain name generators and other tools of the trade. They can give you valuable ideas that you wouldn’t have thought of yourself!
